The practice of making these handcrafted ceramic tile designs began in the late 1500’s. These decorative tiles are both beautiful and functional. Since Mexican Talavera is a glazed and kiln fired ceramic tile, use it as kitchen backsplash tile, bathroom tiles, countertop tiles, tile for fountains, floor accent tiles, wall accent tiles, mural tiles, and restaurant tiles. Mexican Talavera tile is handmade and is a Rustic tile. No two tiles are the same. Some Rustic characteristics include size, thickness and color variations, design variations, chips, bumps, hairline cracks, and color bleeding within the design. The appearance of small surface cracks, or crazing, is also a natural characteristic of Talavera tile. The tiles are not perfectly square and do not lay flat. Pillowing is a natural characteristic of handmade Mexican tile. A full box will cover approximately 11-12.5 square feet considering a ¼” grout line. Each tile measures approximately 4” – 4 ¼” with an approximate thickness of 3/8”. There are slight size and thickness variations within a box of handmade Mexican tiles. Buying tip: These are clay tiles, and there may be a few tiles damaged in the shipping and installation process. Preserve these tiles and use them for cuts where possible. It is recommended to order 15-20% overage to allow for waste, cuts, and borders. For any shortage, you can buy additional tiles by the box quantity. Matching colors is never guaranteed. We do not sell Talavera tile by individual pieces. The color of an actual tile may differ from the appearance on an electronic screen. Consider ordering a sample before placing a whole box order. Cleaning and maintenance tips: clean with a mild cleanser and damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Some glazes are acid-sensitive. Do not use cleaners with an acid-base since these may cause discoloration. Tiles may be sealed with a penetrating sealer. Test any sealer on a small area first before full application of sealer.
