About this item: By Rita Addo Zakour, this imposing mask depicts Queen Idia, mother of Oba (king) Esigie who ruled Benin in the 16th century. The king is said to have worn the mask around his neck to drive away the forces of evil. The artisan names her hand-carved mask Abanbo, an Akan word which means “protection.”
About our Artist: As an artist, Rita Addo Zakour proudly includes African themes into her designs. ‘Having a passion for creating more designs inspires me, and I have taught this art to a number of people. The basic materials I use are sese wood and aluminum sheets. My favorite things in life are cooking and being with my family. I dream that we’ll one day have enough so I can also give back to others.’
